The Egyptian Artichoke Season: February to April
Egypt’s immense agricultural scale and ideal Mediterranean climate allow it to dominate the winter and early-spring fresh artichoke market. While availability begins in November, the most critical ‘Golden Window’ for exports occurs from February to April.
During this period, European consumption peaks, but local EU production cannot satisfy the market. IL Mondo’s strategic proximity to Southern Europe allows for rapid short-sea transit across the Mediterranean, ensuring our fresh, tightly-closed artichokes arrive in Italian, French, and Eastern European distribution centres within days of harvest.

FAQ AboutEgyptian Artichokes
Can fresh Egyptian artichokes survive long transit to Northern Europe or Russia?
Yes. Fresh artichoke heads are harvested at tight maturity, rapidly hydro-cooled to remove field heat, and shipped at 0–1°C with near-saturated humidity (95–100%).
Packed in protective 6kg boxes to minimise mechanical damage, this protocol supports 10–14 days of high-quality shelf life — ideal for Mediterranean short-sea routes and onward road distribution into Central and Northern Europe.
How do you manage browning and oxidation of artichokes?
For fresh whole heads, our strict 0–1°C cold chain and high humidity environment prevent moisture loss and natural oxidation.
If you are purchasing processed formats (fresh-cut hearts or bottoms for freezing/brining), we use EU-approved antioxidant dips (such as acidified solutions) immediately after peeling to halt enzymatic browning.
What varieties and sizes of artichokes do you export?
We primarily export the Baladi and Violet globe varieties. Sizes are graded strictly to customer requests.
We supply everything from small 'baby' artichokes (approx. 2-inch diameter) for specialised culinary use, to medium and large heads, including long-stemmed product preferred by premium retailers.
When does the Egyptian artichoke season begin?
The export season for fresh artichokes from Egypt generally begins in November and runs through April. The peak volumes and highest demand from the European market are concentrated between February and April.
