Bulk Egyptian Onions Premium Red & Golden Varieties
Fully cured, pungent, and long-lasting. Supplying the European and global markets during the critical spring and early summer shortages.
Il Mondo Export supplies premium Egyptian red and golden onions (Allium cepa) to wholesale distributors, supermarket chains, and food processors across Europe, Russia, and the Middle East. Egypt is a global powerhouse in onion exports, and our harvest season perfectly aligns with the depletion of European storage stocks from March through July.
All Il Mondo onions are thoroughly field-cured to ensure necks are completely dry and outer skins are firmly set. Produce is meticulously sorted for uniform sizing, packed in ventilated mesh bags, and managed under strict cold chain controls (0–3°C) to ensure zero sprouting and maximum shelf life upon arrival.

The Egyptian Onion Season: March to July
The global onion market is highly cyclical. During the spring and early summer (March to July), European domestic stocks are heavily depleted, and quality begins to degrade. This creates a massive import window for non-EU origins.
Egypt stands out as the premier supplier during this ‘Golden Window.’ Benefiting from a warm, dry climate that naturally supports excellent curing, Egyptian red and golden onions step in to stabilise the European market, offering a fresh, crisp, and highly pungent product exactly when it is needed most.

Frequently Asked Questions AboutEgyptian Onions
How do you control sprouting and mould in transit and destination storage?
All export onions are fully field-cured until the necks are completely dry and the outer skins are firmly set before packing. We then hold and ship the onions in a strict 0–2°C cold chain with low humidity (65–70%).
This specific climate, combined with highly ventilated PP/leno mesh bags, drastically reduces the risk of sprouting, rooting, and fungal decay.
What size calibers are available for Egyptian onions?
We grade our onions into specific diameter bands: 40–60mm (often used for processing/peeling), 50–70mm (standard retail), 60–80mm (premium retail), and 80mm+ (large wholesale/catering).
What is the difference between Egyptian Red and Golden onions?
Egyptian Red Onions feature a deep purple-red skin, crisp white flesh with red tinges, and a medium-high pungency that makes them highly popular for fresh salads and European retail.
Golden/Yellow Onions have a robust, papery golden skin, excellent long-term storage potential, and are widely preferred for general culinary and industrial processing use.
What packaging formats do you use for onion shipments?
The global standard for our onion exports is 10kg and 25kg PP (polypropylene) or leno mesh bags, which provide essential ventilation. For industrial users and large-scale processors, we also supply 30kg to 50kg jumbo mesh bags.
