Green beans are sensitive to low temperatures. We pre-cool them quickly after harvest and maintain a strict 5–7°C transit temperature with 90–95% relative humidity. We rigorously avoid temperatures below 4–5°C, which cause surface pitting and russeting (chilling injury).
Packaging utilises perforated liners or flowpacks that balance moisture retention with ventilation to prevent condensation and decay.
How is stringiness and quality controlled for UK supermarket specifications?
We implement strict harvest maturity windows. Our grading lines sort beans by length, diameter, colour, and defect tolerance (adhering to ≤3% blemishes for premium programs). Any over-mature pods — which tend to become fibrous and stringy — are immediately discarded.
This ensures a tender product with a clean 'snap'.
What is the difference between French Beans and Standard Green Beans?
French Beans (Haricots Verts) are harvested earlier when they are extra-fine or fine in diameter (usually under 8mm) and 12–16 cm long. They are prized by premium supermarkets and fine dining for their tenderness.
Standard Green Beans are slightly more mature, thicker (8–10mm diameter), and robust, making them excellent for general foodservice and wholesale.
